This is only true on major cracks.
I had a small crack in the oil pan on my MKV from the dealer replacing the camshaft. I think some idiot put a jack stand under the oil pan without any wood between. Anyway, it seeped slowly. I cleaned it up, lathered some JB weld on there and it held for 60k. Right up until the seal was broken by a connecting rod smashing through.
Need help! Busted oil pan!

Hope you got a new pan for about $100 bucks. Worth every penny. Welds and other black magic (JB Weld, etc) is only very temporary and greatly diminishes the value of your car.
Besides, if you get a new pan you only have to do the work once!! ;)Leave a comment:

Some say they do, some say they don't. My car came from California.

Good excuse to weld that up and do the drainless pan mod.
On a serious note, the pan isn't too hard to get off the car if you undo the motor mounts and jack the engine up. If it was a regular crack, JB weld can work if you can stop oil from seeping out long enough for it to set. The patch plate wouldn't be that bad it was a regurlar crack, not the bolt boss busted out. With the patch plate idea, you wouldn't have to worry about possibly warping the pan if it was welded off of the car.Leave a comment:

Looks like you took a hit to EXACTLY the wrong spot, squarely on the drain bolt. Damn...Leave a comment:
