Fairly certain it's not the crank sensor.
I was trying to think about things that I've done that resulted in like symptoms. The first would be an unplugged (non-functioning?) AFM. You may have been on the right track replacing the ignition switch. Have you looked at the ETM and checked the other components and connections in that circuit?
Do your cluster warning lamps remain on when it dies?Comment

The warning lights do come on when the car dies. I have a few extra eta ecus so i tried one a few days ago when this happened, no change. I also have a brand new main relay for troubleshooting purposes and i tried that with no change. I exchanged the unloader relays with the headlight relays with no change. I have unplugged and tried to run each of these sensors with no change afm, tps, baro sensor, o2 sensor, cold start injector, idle air control valve.1989 325i Alpine s52 coupe

I wont be back home to to try that til friday morning but if it is just to power the fuel pump i know that wont work because spraying my own fuel down its throat results in no change. It seems like it is losing spark right after starting. Does anybody know what the second sensor on the bell housing actually does?1989 325i Alpine s52 coupe

If the crank speed sensor is not functioning correctly the car would miss at a constant speed the crank reference sensor if bad the car won't start bc dme cannot locate tdc so it won't ground anythingOriginally posted by bmwm42PNW vulture pm me for partsComment
