    Passing Emissions?

    Hey guys,

So i'm finally an E30 owner! I am coming from an E46 as my most recent car, and just got back from an 18 hour drive from LA after purchasing Orcgrinder's turbo'd E30.

Now I need to register it in WA. When I was initially reading I guess I didn't read enough and thought that since the car is over 25 years old (it's an '85) I didn't have to get it tested. Well now it's looking like I do need to get it tested in order to transfer the title to the state of WA.

There's no way this thing will pass in a million years so i'm in a dilemma. Does anyone know anyone who works at a station that I can pay off or something?

After the accident my E30 was in, it never passed emissions again. My suggestion is to register the car to an address outside of the emission required counties and never have to deal with it. Fortunately I have family in Yakima, so I just registered my E30 out there. Good luck! :)

Who told you that? 25 years and older exempt.

Hell I just brought a 1988 E30 Touring straight from Germany to Washington and it was emissions exempt.

Vehicles between five and twenty-five years old require testing every other year.

If you are new to the state or for licenses that expire in 2013, odd model year vehicles 1989 through 1995 and even model year vehicles 1996 through 2008 need to test before licensing. See chart.

A test is also required to transfer the registered ownership between private parties for 1989 through 2008 model year vehicles unless the vehicle has been tested within the last 365 days. A test is not required to transfer the registered ownership between parents, siblings, grandparents, grandchildren, spouses, legal domestic partners, or present co-owners or to change the legal owner.

The following vehicles never need emission tests:

      Motorcycles

      2009 and newer models

      Toyota Prius and Honda Insight

Yeah, you're mistaken. I JUST registered a 1987 BMW 325e that has STRAIGHT PIPE exhaust on it. I asked the clerk just to be sure, she told me anything older than 1989 is EXEMPT from emissions. Meaning you don't need an emissions/smog test.

        What year is the car?

i passed emmissions with a 3.5 engine turbod. 3 inch exhaust all the way back to a high flow muffler. just go in there and try to have them not connect it to ur coil or whatever they use to try and read your rpm. then when they ask u to rev up to 2500rpm i reved to like 1300rpm and i passed. just disconnect ur tach lol

You'd be surprised what will pass emissions nowadays. They don't even use the dynos any more, just a test with no load @ 2500 rpm.

Thanks for the responses! I just ended up calling the ecology department or whatever and they said that I am in fact exempt from emissions because it's over 25 years old!

Nice, I'll be moving to WA if somehow I cannot pass my cars anymore in CA.
