But but but criv, drifting is more intense then endurance racing! Obviously your m20 is crappy and isn't a good sign of reliability.

My statement is 100% based on my experience behind the wheel of an e30 on the track 60-70 events. If i used my e30s for daily duty and putting around getting on it every once in a while then yea I'd go m50 but the truth of the matter is they are not built to take the abuse an m20 can. The oil basically starts boiling and eating up your top end and this is ridiculous they should have put oil coolers on them.
Complete opposite for me.. I've been through so many rocker arms I cannot even count, snapped oil pump shafts, bearing issues, blah.

Hell I saved my Pro3 season by dropping an M50NV in the car.. no baffle, no cooler, ran the crap out of it, including several endurance races.. didn't have a single issue

^ I think it would help a lot and most likely solve lot of the problems I was having. I just got fed up and wasn't very impressed with the power increase at all. 15 hp more and all that work/time to swap just was ridiculous for me. I beat the hell out of my cars soo I'm going to be biased towards a solid engine versus a 10% increase in power.

So if you throw an oil cooler in an m50 does it improve their track life quite a bit.

I've had an old worn out 2.5i in my car and vs my rebuilt 2.7i it's crap. I've driven m50 e30 they drive a lot differently so I'd see if I could get a ride in a few cars before doing anything. Also having done pulls with m50 swapped e30s I'm happy to say that I pulled or kept even with the m50s every time (keep in mind I have the heavier vert as well) I say build the 2.7i. If you are planning to boost in the future do everything the first time through so you don't have to second guess anything later on. Listen to the guys that have done the build not the ones who just talk crap every chance they get.

Here's my first track car m20 powered 40 events still running to this day!

Here is my m50 e30 lasted 9 events before the top end starting starving itself of oil.

Here's one of the last events I took the m50 to if you listen closely throughout you can hear it cutting out and not producing any power

Now you know what we use our e30s for and why m50s aren't half the motor the m20 is. Have a great day everyone and enjoy your e30! I know I have for the past 10 years and 20+ e30s I've been through!

The op is probably lurking... I do agree that the stock form m20 can handle a lot more of a beating.

Were talking track/race engine here, and if you think a stock 24v with no oil cooler is gonna last long. Well, your probably high or have never driven it hard enough to figure out.

Most of the 24 valve cars I've seen/ driven at the track heat up and stay hot, and start to clack by the end of the season. That's in 75 degree Washington weather, I could only imagine trying to race one in real heat.

This thread is months old and OP is nowhere to be seen! I am not a M20 hater I just get tired of people making statements like the above. M20 is a great engine but not godlike.

    Happy Thanksgiving Paolo

Definitely. Less turns = less wear.
