Your state wants to initiate a road tax based on how many miles you drive vs the vehicle weight?
I would rather pay a tax based on weight vs usage. I don't live in the city and I don't have public transportation so the usage thing to me is huge BS.
Taxachusetts has been trying to push this through legislature. If you want to live in the city and own a car and use it once a month fine but don't subject me to your crazy reality. My $0.02
The idea is there would be a flat tax rate you can pay for say, unlimited miles OR, Android/Iphone app's that would track how much you drive OR, something along the lines of a GPS unit in your car.
Terrible idea. And hugely intrusive. There's so much shit I already have to do just to get through the day with my phone, work, calls, texts, e-mails, blah blah. I can't imagine having to have my phone charged or make sure I have it charged pre-driving to work constantly.
Nope not happening will not subject myself to that. I leave my phone home often so they couldn't use that method nor would I allow Flow's company to install nor the state to install a Lojack system. Basically that's what it is.
I'd rather cough the cash up for a real plan. I pay enough taxes based on use, GAS/ Home heating tax for pipeline distribution, Band Width we use.
We are rapidly becoming a country that will slap a tax on it and just smile.
Hey, want a tax structure that takes in to account miles driven AND weight/road damage, but without actaully tracking anyone or creating privacy problems? It's called the FUCKING GAS TAX AND IT ALREADY FUCKING EXISTS. Drive a lot of miles? Pay more in tax. Drive a heavy vehicle? Pay more in tax. Don't drive at all? Pay no tax. It's a fucking miracle!
Seriousely, all these half-brained new tax schemes are fucking retarded. What's the point of getting rid of the gas tax and instituting some massively complex and intrusive mileage tracking scheme that will only accomplish the same thing, albeit with far less accuracy and way more overhaed/headaches?

The excuse is the rise in popularity of hybrids and electric cars.
Simple: up the registration fees. We pay something line $85 every 2 years; make electric cars pay a higher rate to compensate for the (relatively small) road wear they incur and the gas taxes they avoid.

While I dont always agree with Darren, hes right. Gas tax exists for a good reason. A gallon of gas is like 10¢ but the rest is tax. I some times drive 1000miles in 3-4 days. I wont be hapy if I have to pay by the mile.
Knew a kid in High School whos dad owned a shell station and he said he made 11¢ on every gallon sold, the rest he sent away for tax
