WA wants to tax you for ___________ (insert anything here).

I emailed under a relatives address, because of passionate distaste for taxes.

Any link to the original legislation? That letter just seems to make a bunch of claims that sound good on paper, without giving any evidence.

It says it discourages online companies from settling in WA, but I don't see how that could be the case if WA would collect tax no matter where the company is located. In fact, I am pretty sure we already have to pay taxes for purchase from online business located in WA, i.e. Amazon.

How would it encourage online businesses to stop working with WA businesses?

Finally, the letter mentions "many online marketplaces", are you sure the legislation is worded in such a way that all out-of-state online purchases would be taxed, if so then why does the letter make this distinction?

I think this is taxes paid by the company itself and adds more taxes for people buying stuff? I dont know, but sounds similar to the tax reform that caused amazon, tmobile, etc all to move up here in the first place.

With the wording and zero sources, to me it looks like an info grab.

Also, as much as we may hate it, you're supposed to pay sales tax on everything that you buy, regardless of where.

The government is going to get theirs, one way or another. This sort of legislation is popping up everywhere and will ultimately be nationwide within the next 5-10 years, you're delusional if you think the days of no sales tax from out of state shippers is going to last.

we already pay sales tax on anything purchased in WA online. so if you buy from amazon, you're paying tax, which is like 90% of my online purchases anyway.

but before you throw in the towel - imagine how this affects somebody like Blunt. Now he has to figure out the taxes for out of state purchases, and then send a cheque or something to WA. how would that work exactly?

I don't see how it is enforced for out of state companies, such as Blunttech.
