Screw up of the day - bolt in bell housing

So I was test fitting the new starter last night and had the mounting bolt in my hand. Well the bolt decided to slip out of my fingers and make a miraculous shot to fall right into the bell housing.

So now I think my plan is to go fishing with a magnet and hope for a miracle, but I don't have my hopes up considering all the other parts the magnet will be attracted to. I thought maybe one of those flexible grabby things, but again I think its a long shot. I might try a strong magnet on the outside of the bell housing to at least try and position the bolt for extraction.

I really don't want to pull back the trans consider the access to the bolts now that the trans is tilted 15deg will be a PITA. Last option is pulling the motor back out, which i also don't want to do.

If you can't fish it out with a magnet, pulling the trans really isnt too bad. The 10 degree tilt sucks, but it can be done...i had to do it when my first trans took a shit on me :(
To reach the top bolts of the trans, i had to remove the intake manifold for enough clearance. You might not need to, but for me, it was easier that way.

    Good luck man! almost there!

Do you have one of those cheap USB bore (inspection) cameras? they're like 20 bucks and you can plug them into some android phones or any pc. might make it easier for you to find where it went inside the bellhousing.

Isn't there an inspection plate on the bottom you can just drop to get at it?

I've got a couple of strong magnets. So strong they are no fun to play with cuz they will pinch the shit out of you.

Double this. I have one for Android, and it works well.

No inspection plate th at I'm aware of. Fishing it out definitely isn't happening. I've tried the flexible grabber, a magnet on a telescope, looking with a borescope, and super strong magnets on the outside. The answer looks like manning up and pulling back the trans.

Oh and rain Rider the best thing you can do with the magnets is to keep them away from each other like one in each front pocket.

I had this happen, used flywheel inspection holes, and removed it

Yeah I tried that too. I actually ended up pulling the motor back out after messing with the bell housing bolts for way too long. It's not progress but it's something

Reminds me of a mistake I made on a Mazda once, I was changing the oil, so I had the oil filler cap off and the oil was starting to drain out... While that was happening I decided to change the cabin air filter. You need to pop off these tiny plastic covers to expose the screws on the cowl.... Popped one off with the screwdriver, and watched it as it made an ark up, down, and SWOOSHED right into the oil fill hole. *ploop* Gone.

You have to be impressed with some of this stuff. Good luck getting that bolt out.
