It's probably their goal to make less people in cars and try to get more people on transit. Oregon government hates cars. If I have to take transit every day because I can't afford $2000, I will see my son a lot less.

Given the state of Europe right now, and the fact you want less govt... yeah I'd say that'd be a bad, bad move. Maybe eastern Europe, they seem to have less BS.

Things like this make NJ seem nice though. In the past 10 years, we've gotten rid of the safety inspection, and as of last year, cars older than ~1995 or so require no inspection whatsoever. I think the underlying reason is that they can't afford it, but whatever. I'll take it.

You know Germany is even more intense with their registration fees/etc, and that they're looking to move away from fuel powered vehicles altogether?

Eastern Europe has even more BS, if you have money, it's just not 'the law'.

I guess it depends on what kind of BS you want to avoid, and what you can deal with. But maybe it would be best to avoid Europe entirely.

Frankly we're really lucky in the PNW to have as many cheap available import cars as we have. In Europe all of the $500 shitboxes we like to part out and rebuild got scrapped a decade ago.
