Certainly does not meet all the criteria but I did spot this on Copart yesterday if you consider a project

There was one at Speeds on Tuesday.. Little better shape and less miles. I bid on it, but it closed higher then I wanted to splurge. Though it looks like they didn't accept the high bid for some reason.

Hey thanks guys! A project may be fine if it’s cheap enough and that one looks cheap! Maybe the one at Speeds will be back for auction?

          I'm not sure.

It may have been a donation vehicle, and they sometimes have a reserve on them. It's kinda weird, not entirely sure how they do that. I've bought cars through them before, but it's almost always been high bid wins. I forget what the final bid was, because I only went 1K on it.

Okay. Was the one at Speeds pretty nice? Do you remember any details on it?

I went to Copart and looked at the one there today. It's definitely a project car. It would be about $1200 with fees out the door. It could be a good deal or it could be a can of worms.

Details about it in case anyone is considering it:
The body is good, no dents or major scratches, except for the bonnet where the clearcoat has failed, so it'll need new paint or be replaced. It needs new front seats and a new rear one too if you want it nice since it has wear. The front windows are open so it's wet and kinda moldy inside. The door lock switch on the center console is missing. The moonroof shade doesn't open or close very well. It's missing the battery so it can't be started. The worker told me they tried to jump start it but it died. It has no oil in the engine (I checked the dipstick), so that's probably why. Hard to say if the engine is good. Other drivetrain components have unknown condition as well. Rear brakes look good. Front brakes look like they could need new pads. Needs new tires (they're bald and flat). Couldn't tell if the wheels are all straight. Everything under the bonnet looked good cosmetically. Door panels and dashboard are in good shape. Missing the cargo area cover and spare wheel. I didn't see any corrosion. It's an Oregon car so that's good. Looks like it was sold new in Salem. It would be a good candidate for an M3 conversion since all that stuff would get replaced anyways. Looks like it was a good car until the most recent owner who put a ton of miles on it the last 2 years.

Speeds doesn't have one listed for next Tuesday's auction, so it must have sold.

We got the one from the Speeds auction from the guy who bought it. He cleaned it up really well and put new tires on it. It’s really nice. Local car with good service history on the Carfax report. Looks like it was owned by an older couple who donated it to the Oregon Historical Society.

Nice! That's pretty much what my plan was going to be too.. :)

They get a few that one and they go for good money through the auction. How much did you pick it up for?

$4k. We figured it was fair. Less than half the price of the one at BMW Portland and in far better condition. More options too. It’s loaded! Sport & premium packages, power heated seats, xenon.

Okay, I may be interested in getting one for myself as a daily to replace the X3. I like the X3, but the E46 is so sleek and I love that the tailgate window opens. So dumb they left that feature off the X3. I would want to turn it into a 330xi with a 6-speed. I like that engine/trans combo in the X3 and I think it'd be even better in the E46.
