John, have you tried these ? My favorite by a long shot. One outer housing, replaceable inserts in threaded sizes and smooth for dowel removal. Use it with a slide hammer for dowel removal, zero damage to threads or dowels.

Have not, but the tool truck guys showed them to me. Still happy with the AST, pulled hundreds of studs so far, and the only ones that have marks were ones that were extremely rusted/caked in. Generally just lock some vice-grips on the stubborn suckers. Snagged this rare 4 barrel setup for my boat. Bumps it from 165 to 190hp.
Now I just gotta learn how to tune without a laptop, and when the motor comes out for floor restoration this winter, I need to find an aluminum Ford 429 head and I should be able to squeeze 220hp or so out of it.
Some of us just can't leave things alone, modify everything. Amirite?
