85 coupe - Track/AutoX Build - M52B28 - Euro Bumpers - 5 lug

After last years driving school and trashing the fender on my M5 I decided I can't afford to keep beating up my M5 on the track. It's also too heavy/powerful for me to really enjoy and learn. 4 years ago I sold my 89 e30 autox car soon after buying it because of a career change and moving out of state. Anyway, long story short I missed my e30 and wanted another ever since.

I saved a bit of money and went on the hunt for a local e30. My plan was to find a good deal on a car with a straight body, no/minimal rust and decent interior. The mechanical condition really doesn't matter much to me because I can fix all of that. I swore I would never get another car that needed major body work after owning my 83 landcruiser. I can do some paint correction but I hate body work!

I found this car:

Apparently this color was carried over from the 2002's into some of the early model e30 production for a couple years.

seats are still pretty good, except the tattered passenger leg bolster.

Wow Looks Like a good start. Love that cloth interior and a cool color. Did not know E30's came in that.

Thanks man. I've sourced a lot of the parts so far and plan on getting it up on the lift this weekend. I just need the snow to melt so I can pull me dad's 335 out of the shop.

nice. looks like a sweet build. Will the e46 m3 front brakes fit under 17 inch rims? was under the impression they could only fit under 18 inch rims.

looking forward to seeing where this build goes

The designer of the bbk/5lug kit runs 17s and I'm pretty sure a stock e46 m3 can run 17s. But your assumption is on track, as the e46 m3 had 18s stock.

Made some progress yesterday and started breaking down the M52. I need to decide if I'm going to pull the head and do a head gasket and valve seals.

Took stock, and unpacked parts.

Made some more progress on the engine. Assumed the oil was drained from the engine....but found out the messy way it wasn't...

Cam lobes look good. I plan to get into the bottom end this weekend and check the bearings.

More Progress Made

Made some more progress.

Got the diving boards pulled, original exhaust and drive line pulled.

I was excited to find almost no rust on the underside, except the exhaust and a few spots of surface rust near the wheel wells and on the trailing arms. I will convert, treat and coat after tear down.

This weekend I plan on pulling the engine. I decided against doing a full rebuild on the engine M52, in the interest of time. I need this car running for the spring driving school at HPR and with luck before autox season starts. Euro bumpers showed up from Latvia and smilies from Netherlands. Still have to source all of the rubber parts like gaskets, o-rings and hoses.

Side note:

Can anyone suggest a place to lift from on the rear of the car other than the sub-frame so I can remove it?

Thanks guys. New Update.

e46 330ci steering rack came, unwrapped euro bumpers and smilies.

Got the M20 pulled and started prepping the engine bay. The M20 has a blown rear main and leaked like a stuck pig all over the place. Lots of de-greasing to do.

I'm sending off the injectors for rebuilding today.

I also decided to rebuild the M52 while it's out. As if I don't already have enough to do....
