August 2018 Car of the Month: mike.bmw

***Editors Note: After having a long string of various modified Schwarz ( no 'T' right agent ;D ) I decided to bring back some OEM+ goodness. I absolutely love his build thread because his documentation is lovely and really what he is doing is keeping a good example in excellent shape. He also doesnt drive it like a garage queen even though nobody would fault him for doing so. It was delayed by me, but I think its right on time. Congrats Mike, you're the August 2018 Car of the Month!***

    Story behind the car:
I started looking for an E30 in mid 2015. I test drove a number of local cars that didn't pan out. As time went on my search radius expanded. In March 2016 I had a solid lead on a nice 318is in Atlanta, GA. I got on a plane the next morning, flew to Atlanta, looked over the car, bought it, and drove it 650 miles home (~10 hours). All in the same day. I finally had an E30!

At the time of purchase it had 132K miles with original paint, original glass, no accidents, all original VIN stickers, and the A/C was ice cold (still R12). While the body and interior were in good condition it needed quite a bit of work mechanically. I've documented that in my journal.

A little over 2 years later it has ~141K miles. It has been a hobby and borderline obsession for me. Thankfully my wife and 2 kids support my obsession. They enjoy taking trips in the E30, attending car events, and my daughter loves helping me wash and work on it. Proof being the two car seats in the back :-). I've actually put more miles on the E30 than my daily, just because I enjoy driving the E30 so much. I've tried to document and work on the car as much as my time and skills allow. For everything else I've taken it to a great local shop: RRT.

My goals for the car have been fairly simple: keep it clean and original (which is why I don't have a big list of modifications). Moving forward I plan to swap out the existing suspension for a traditional Bilstein + H&R setup, source and install a small case 4.10 LSD, and continue to drive it as much as possible.

I've met a lot of great E30/R3V folks over the last 2 years and it's always a blast to wrench together or meet up at Cars and Coffee. There are many great build threads on this site that serve as both an inspiration and motivation for my project. Thanks R3V!

Thanks everyone! I was floored that Simon contacted me about COTM when there are so many great cars and talented owners on R3V. It really is an honor.

I've been itching to post those photos. Although it's just a parking garage shoot, I was happy how they turned out as I don't have real photography skills. I figured I'd include one in my garage as well (all the kids' toys were temporarily displaced outside the garage ;D ).

I'm glad you enjoy my thread! I'll continue to post updates as I do more things with the car. This year I'm hoping to attend another HPDE and trackcross, replace my springs and shocks (still researching options), and swap in a small case 4.10 LSD (assuming I can find one as they are unobtainium).

Weird happenstance. Browsing thru this forum because I'm looking for a red or white 318is like Mike's and see my Blue 69 2002 parked next to his car at the Sterling BMW C&C. This was just prior to the DMC show in Vienna.
