How long will a humming fuel pump last?

Yesterday my car starting making a loud buzzing noise coming from the pump by the drivers side rear wheel. I replace the filter and the lines and the buzzing turned to a slightly audible with some cracks here and there. How long is this gonna last? I know this is the external pump that's making the noise and I don't mind replacing it, but I'm short on cash at the time.

i was in the same boat a few months ago. vatozone POS i used to replace the oem bosch external unit only lasted me 18 months. It started buzzing and died in about 2 weeks from the day it started to buzz really loud.

Me and my friend have replaced both of our cars with Bosch fuel pumps and both of ours are humming again. I bought a $30 eBay pump I was using till my next pay check and that was humming only slightly louder then the Bosch so eBay might be your best bet bang for the buck to be honest, and i never put eBay parts in my car.

edit: Keep in mind I'm talking about the early external pumps

        ...until it learns the words...

Honestly, tho, if it's making that 'snap' noise, not all that long. Weeks if you're lucky?

Well it's only humming now but do I only need to replace the external pump or is the internal pump a factor in this

A bad internal pump will cause the external pump to suck when it is designed to push. This creates cavitation (look that up if you need to) and sounds like bubbling in the hose.

Def check the in tank before you spend any money

If a new OE/OEM pump starts making noise soon after installation, there is a more fundamental problem. That could on a dual pump car be a bad in-tank transfer pump. And on those and single pump cars could be from an obstruction in the fuel supply/return lines, or a rusty tank.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

How long would you last if she sat on you? That's about how long your fuel pump will last you...about 30sec?

If it's whining, it's already no good. Its RPM has dropped and it will starve your system under load causing a lean condition. It should be replaced immediately.

Have you ever spun something on a pencil and it spun freely for a second and then it sort of buzzed real quick and came to a dead stop almost instantly? That's exactly what's happening to the armature inside the worn out bushings in the motor. It's wobbling around violently and can't spin at full speed.

mine has been buzzing on and off for a few years. I have a spare for when it goes off.

i only had the late model high pressure in-tank pump, but mine buzzed for months before i got tired of it and swapped it out.

If they still sell it, you can find a Walboro 255 pump that is re-branded as Airtex e2448 at advance auto. I put that in my coupe about a year ago and no issues, plus IIRC it was under $70.

You'll have to take out you're in-line high pressure pump and put the Airtex in-tank.
