    cutting H&R race springs

i know that you cant cut regular srpings, but i thought that i read some where that you can cut some off of the the H&R race with out affenting the handling of the spring/car

and if it is true how much can you cut them and how much more will it lower the car?

You can cut whatever you want. What you can do and what you should do are 2 very different things.

And why would you cut a set of $400 springs?

It's somewhat common to cut half of one of the dead coils from the front to bring it down about a 1/4"-1/2". Do a search on S14.net and you will see a bunch of topics on it.

If you cut half a coil, how will it sit properly in the perch?

The upper perch rotates freely 360 degrees.

Yeah, a 60mm drop is probably exactly what you are looking for... and can be had for $200, not $400 + cutting good springs

                      Ummm....
                      No...
                      Not a good idea.

Call H&R I'm sure they will tell you why.

I doubt anyone would (or should) listen to anything here.

The spring constant, k, changes because the number of active coils, N, changes. Although small, it does make a difference.

Do a quality job, Don't cut the springs. Get a 60/40 kit

K doesn't change because you still have the same number of active coils, unless you cut an active coil, which is why people cut one half of a dead coil from the top. It's been done before. If you want numbers, I can find them. Let me do that for ya real quick....

edit: If you were to cut ONE FULL dead coil, you might increase the stiffness by up to 10% (goes from 350 to 385). But since we are only talking a half of a dead coil, at the most it would increase stiffness to 370, and it would lower the front of the car just enough to even out the stance. With my H&R Race springs I have about a 1/2" gap between my front tire and wheel well, see sig, and I have a total of 3 spring pads in the rear, one on bottom and two on top, and there is no gap between the tire/wheel and the fender well.

I have a set of very low springs from my M3 for sale if your interested. The car is now on h&R sports, and the car sits about 2" higher now on the sports than it did on these springs. i have no idea what they are(cannot find numbers on them) But they are low.
                            PM if interested.
