It was extremely easy for me. The miramar college bar station was really chill! But I did do quite a bit to make it through this easy. I have an obdI s50, stock ceramic coated exhaust manifolds, stock ecu with a delete chip, two brand spankin new e36 cats, and the stock e36 o2 sensor location. The only thing I was really worried about was my K&N cone filter which they didn't say anything about. Other than that it was pretty straight forward. I had no problem with smog on it since the whole top end was rebuilt and most of the swap was new. If you have any questions feel free to ask me.

      -Ian

P.S I like your build thread! and I heard sacramento is fairly easy to pass the bar

You most definitely need the EVAP hooked up. That's smog equipment.

question if anyone can help me out it would be much appreciated. Im trying to bar my swap. Three things i keep failing in. My VSS reads at 18 mph at all times, they also want me to provide documentation on the right ECU and flash but haven't told me which one to get. What am i missing?

dude that is SO awesome, congrats!! (jus noticed this is 2+ years old lol)

Im tempted to do this soon, Im just sketched out because Im running an OBD1 M52 and have a few OBD2 parts on the car still. Main smog stuff is there though, S52 exhaust manifolds (with SAI ports welded up) , S50 downpipe, stock cats.

I know I need to wire up the CEL though, and I dont have a charcoal canister on my car.

                  Did they check those?

I used aftermarket cats, BUT you have to get the ones that say "California approved" ones.

any examples of a CEL setup? Did you just put one in the center console somewhere or on the dash? This was the one visual inspection item I did not pass.

also, any experience w/ really high NOX readings at 15 mph (>2200 vs. 650 for passing) and high HC's? S50 OBD1, M50 intake, Dinan CAI, stock exhaust and new cats, not sure which chip I am running - need to check. Car runs hot b/c I probably need to bleed the system (m44 rad, Stewart H20 pump, etc.). Any suggestions where to start w/ this?

I have an M3, which doesn't have the Check Engine light in the cluster, or I would have tried using that. Instead, I just get a red LED bulb and mounted it to one of the blank covers next to the hazard and rear defrost buttons. I used a label maker to make a hideous "CHECK ENGINE" sticker. It's pretty basic but worked, and was good enough for the inspector. Basically, my S50 experience was very much like Ian's.

thx e30user - the referee said any light/label combo would work, as long as it was functioning. I may put mine on the center console where I put my gauges (aftermarket, in the blank area in front of the ash tray).

I wanted to make a label that said "oh shit" or something, or maybe just a skull & crossbones or something stupid... not sure if they would appreciate my humor
