    And it begins...

That on the 4th day of May, in the year two thousand and eight, Josh finally decided on the engine he will build for his car. I give you, the 20k mile, (yes, 20,000 mile) 2.7L bottom end, which will become a 2.7i.

The story goes, I just finished parting out a 325es for a friend of mine that he took off the road into a ditch. In exchange for me parting out the car and selling the parts for him, he's given me this bottom end, along with a 325i intake manifold and throttle body. The engine in the car was replaced about 3 years ago with a brand new crate eta motor, and at the time of the accident, had 20,135 miles on it. Just take a gander at those cylinder walls!

I haven't nailed down everything yet, but I will be using super eta pistons in combination with a 325i head and top end, including harness and ECU. I will be doing proper headers, no shortys, but I haven't decided which ones yet, I'm leaning toward the Bav Auto headers. It will get a decent cam, knife edged crank, crank scraper, your usual headwork, port-matched head inlets, all that good stuff. My goal is to have the engine installed by spring of '09, leaving me lots of time to do things right, get good parts, install everything correctly and have it running perfectly. I'm not sure how often I'll be updating this thread, but it will be a good one when I do. Wish me luck!

Holy Buttfuck Yes! That will be über-fun to build, and later drive I'm sure!

Considering the list of work you'll be doing to the bottom end, there is virtually no benefit to have a low mileage block.

Glad to hear you're putting together something fun for the car though!

The advantage is I don't have to worry about the condition of parts like the crank, rods, bearings, etc.

Also, it means the cylinder walls are still in great shape, but I'm still going to hone them.

So, are 2.7i builds similar to the LS/VTEC thing that the Honda camp does?

make sure you check the piston to valve clearance!

I wouldn't waste money on a knife edged crank - that's more something you would do for a high-rpm build with super lightweight parts. I would just stick to the basics - cam, exhaust, tuning. a knife edged crank will get you maybe 1%, but the other three will get you 25% :)
