    Air box question

So I just bought an air box for my car for pick n pull.

What is this piece that clips to the inside where the afm is? What does it do? Do I need it?

that is the velocity stack that helps increase the speed of the air entering your intake.
you do not NEED it but it certainly helps with airflow and power so it is a wise piece to keep

its there to attenuate sound and provide low flow losses (its radiused like a bellmouth) into the AFM and a more uniform flow (straighten the flow ) regime to the AFM. if you can figure out how to shorten it about an inch (so it is not so close to the wall) it will provide a better flow path it might help very slighty but dont delete it. if you delete it you will be left with a sharp edge at the entry to the AFM which is very bad

If you remove that, it will costs you 4-5whp. Leave it and the entire stock intake on for a stock-ish car. Dyno proven on a Spec e30.
