    Rust goes both ways

    I was looking for a beater for school as I have to drive 40 miles a day for class and I hate to put that kind of millage on my M as its already near 180k.

    Then I found a nice little e30 in the rust belt. This thing is rusty. I swear half the diff has to be rust and the ebrake was rusted to the inside of the rotor so bad that we had to use a truck to pull it up the trailer to get it home and that still didn't break it free. Also it may have been in a slight wreck that will require me to replace the rear trailing arm.

    But... it was $350, with a clean title, who can say no to that? (not that I haven't already spent that much on brakes and battery, lets not get started on rear suspension)

    White leather interior, mystery wiring, 10 different kinds of spiders and half the original tool kit.







    I plan to do awful unforgivable things to this car.

    Before I do that though I need the damn thing to drive correctly. The rear wheel is cockeyed to shit so I'm starting out by replacing the rear subframe.

    Sounds like quite a project you've got yourself there!
    When you said your M, I immediately assumed e30 m3.
    ...and then I saw the e36.
    That car should have most of its parts transferred to the e30.
    Then it would make a good daily!

      So I scored a rear subframe and trailing arm from a guy who actually pointed me toward this forum and who knew a friend of mine.

      Sweet $100 how could I go wrong?




      Needs new bushings and some paint to prevent it from looking like my current suspension.

      Paint I can do!



      I was feeling very manly after painting car parts so I decided to try and remove the diff.

      Jacking up the car was terrifying as all the jack points are rusted out. I put the factory jack on the jack points and started cranking. The jack went up but car did not. After some persuading I got the rear on jack stands screw the front.




      More to come when I'm less lazy.

          First step, remove exhaust. Being as it was half removed already I decided to go for it.

              I admire your intentions, but that car just has too much rust to be worth all of the hassle. But I do wish you the best of luck with it!

                I went and took a look at this one 2 weeks ago and thought the same thing. Apparently the guy had bald tires in the rain and slid the right rear tire into something hard. Good luck with it, your a brave man.

                            meh. since you're down there, I would have just paid $1k for something that was rust free but needed work. At least then the end would justify the means. With a rusty chassis, you can sink as much as you want into it maintenance wise. You still won't get anything out of it
