    S2R Sunroof Delete?

These things have super reviews in the e36 community. I've read about great fitment - 1/16" gap to the sheetmetal opening and mounts using factory points and hardware. You just seal the gap and go. Does anyone have experience with one in an e30? I haven't done anything new to my car in a while and am thinking of splurging on the cleared cf version. It takes 35 lbs or so from the roof!

Deleting the sunroof and the cassette isn't difficult, though it does require removing the head liner, some metal cutting, welding, filling and repainting. But it will take ~40lb off the car that is all up high. The only things you need to buy are some 4mm wire, body filler (use the metal filled variety), and paint. The wire is used to wrap around the sunroof skin to fill the gap left when the "gasket" is deleted.
The car makes it possible, but the driver makes it happen.

Why not just skin your whole roof with carbon/glass, then cut the roof skin 3" from each edge and bond on your new fuhraze carbon roof skin?

          It would be even lighter

Or you could save yourself $300 and use a sheet of lexan to cover the sunroof hole, just rivet it on using some burr washers.

Is it 35 pounds just for the sunroof? Or the whole sunroof/cassette/sliders and things?

gotta be the whole assembly. the sunroof panel itself is still pretty heavy for what it is but probably only 10 lbs at the most.

i'm probably going the lexan route for mine

Removing the cassette seems like a pain in the ass.

yeah, 35-40 lbs for the whole cassette. Its a track car, so I'll be ripping out the headliner - no need to be careful with the removal. I also realize I can reuse the skin, weld it, and paint it etc for cheaper. But that is significantly more work, especially since I'm not a welder or a painter.

Basically, I haven't done any new "mods" on the car for a couple of years now - just replacing tires and brake pads. I read a thread on bimmerforums about how nice these fit in the e36 and got an itch to do something new.

My car's black, so the carbon could produce a more finished look than lexan or spray painted aluminum or something "much cheaper."

if you're handy with an angle grinder and a heat gun its pretty easy. just messy. i got mine out in a couple hours. there's a DIY i used somewhere that was pretty helpful as far as showing where to drill spot welds and what not

Seems like for a track car, 40lbs at the very top of the car would be a worthwhile change. How close is the e36 sunroof shape to the e30? Could one of those be modified to fit?

I know this thread is kinda old, but to install the S2R delete, is removing the whole cassette required or just the panel?

pretty sure you would have to remove the whole cassette.

but why would you even bother trying to just replace the panel with this piece and not remove the whole cassette? you're gonna spend $250+ on a new part and save like 8lbs at the most. the whole point of the delete is to get all of that weight up top out.

just save your $250 and do it the becauseracecar way:

This is my daily. I'm not worried about weight savings. What I am worried about is the rusty panel I have that leaks when it rains even just a little. I could replace just the panel, but both my rails are broken too. Already had to replace the crank once and the gasket. Tired of replacing shit. Just want something that won't rust or leak.

But, do tell how you did yours. I don't even care if it looks like that. I kinda like it... would match my fender flares!
