    Convertible Battery Mounting

    Guys:

I picked up a one-owner triple black 1987 vert last weekend and need some info on how the battery is mounted. This is my first E30 vert. Gorgeous, gorgeous car!

What I currently have in the car is a very dead Group 47 battery, and underneath the battery on the right side is a small 1" x 2" plastic block, about 1/4" thick that the battery sits on. There is nothing on the left side and there is no plastic undertray, drain tube, hold down clamps or anything else present.

RealOEM is a bit sketchy on what exactly is supposed to be here.

Can someone take a few pictures of a properly sorted vert battery tray so I know what to order?

Pictures coming once it's all detailed!

    Thanks!

I can't be the only vert owner! I'll take a description rather than pictures at this point.

Battery sits on the battery tray in the engine compartment, no plastic liners, no blocks. Look at your battery, at its base are "wings" that jut out. There's an indent at the firewall that'll accommodate it. The front of the battery tray will have a threaded hole for the hold down clamp that will hold the "wings" on that side.

        Thanks! That helps!

I tracked (actually stopped) a convertible in a local parking lot and talked the owner into opening the hood for me. Those little white plastic blocks apparently allow you to use different size batteries in the tray. Since mine has a group 47 battery, I would use one of the blocks on each side. These keep the battery from moving left and right while the bolted clamp keeps it held in place against the firewall.

my '87 doesn't have any white plastic blocks. Just the metal tray with a screw hole for the plastic tie down.

my inner fender has a stud welded to it that's just aching to puncture my battery if it ever slides that way so I use the plastic block to make damn sure that doesn't happen. No idea why that stud is there.

Plastic block is just what you mentioned for, different sized batteries. Group 47 vs group 48. I think if I remember correctly it's Teflon or some other durable plastic, because of proximity to the exhaust.

Did you ever take a picture of this? I just bought a '92 vert and the battery just sits on bare steel with no clips or anything. I want to find the right tie down to secure it properly.

                Thanks,

The hold down clamp is a trapezoidal shaped metal piece with a formed edge that fits over the ridge at the bottom of the battery. The clam1p is held down by a fillister head screw that fits into a threaded hole near the forward edge of the battery tray.. Both the clamp and screw should still be available from the dealer.

I took i-pics today but I'm too lazy to post them here. If anyone wants them, PM me your email.

61-21-1-350-825 nylon spacer (you'll need two of these)

Note that with variations in battery size, the nylon spacer(s) may not be needed.

Finally got the parts. I'm not entirely sure how the space fits in but this is the only spot that seemed to make sense.

The bottom arrow points to the nylon spacer.
The middle arrow points to the bracket holding down the battery.
The top arrow points to some weird bracket that doesn't look factory and seems to be there to keep the cable away from the battery.

Does this look right to you guys?

                            Thanks,
                            Amre
