Clavin's continuing adventure, crashy crashy PICS

Nutshell: on the Eugene Meet cruise, went to pass in a passing zone like everyone else did, decided not to pass, went back into my lane, hit brakes hard, brakes locked (ABS FAILURE) and trailer hitch meets my front end.

    Well the insurance is settled...

Apparently I didn't have a choice in the matter of totalling the car out. The insurance said state law made them report all this to the DMV. I am still trying to figure out how a car that was purchased for $5000 BEFORE MODS AND MAINTENENCE can be valued at $3655, especially after the appraiser THEY SENT OUT gave Jordan and I an average value of $5500 (not including my "extras" that I have on her). Eventually, with receipts I managed to scrounge up, they bumped the value to $4250. I also want to know how that appraiser's original extimate of $3700 worth of damage translated to $7500 in damage by the time my insurance people got a hold of things. Anyways, I end up with a salvage title, $385 check for the tow, $3340 for the car (everything all said and done), and I have to get a "brake and light check" when I smog/register in June.

A few notes about all this:

First off, the help and hospitality I experienced from everyone on my trip that weekend was just stellar. All you guys who hung around after the accident are wonderful people for your support (see examples in pics below). All you guys who left the accident... it's all good, I understand the mentality and thank you for not adding to a possible crowd-thing happening.... even though I saw most of you later anyways. More specifically, Colby and Jon were good guys to lend me a floor to sleep on, and to call up and check on me (Josh too). Jordan... dude... I gotta sing the praises. You've got the skills, you've got the heart (fuck what some people might say to that), and you've got some kickass parents to back it all up, the seven cats included. Thank you for what you have done and continue to do to help me along. Sorry about that drill bit I broke drilling out spot welds  . Just so you all know, one of the first things I remember someone telling me right after I crashed was "Jordan said he will drive you home if need be." Yeah, damn. Bavarian Auto Recylcing = kickass service and prices. Excellent brakes mean shit if the ABS = teh sux0r. Oregon is rainy. Kthx.

Hey, at least you're alright, the car can get fixed, and fortunately it landed in some pretty helpful hands to get that accomplished. Its unfortunate that it happened at all and also that the unsurance comany isnt giving you any more for the car, but as my coworker always says though "dont worry, we'll make it happen" (which can get quite annoying, but is true). You'll get her back on the road sooner than later, I'm sure of that. Come by and show off the bodywork to me whenever you bring'er home. I'd like to see how it turns out :)

Good to see things have at least somewhat worked out for you, Clay. I saw Jordan's progress on the car firsthand, and the rebuild is going spledidly.

          See you in August.

How fast were you going? I heard it was only about 40mph, but it took you 60-70ft. to stop? And there were skid marks that hole time... there shouldn't be skid marks if you had no traction at all. Even without ABS, you would have stopped shorter than that from 40mph. Wasn't the truck at a stop sign when you rear ended him?

Just quit blaming the ABS and man up.

Let's drive fast and have fun.

I have the AUDIO on tape... one tire slid almost twice as long as the other, about 60-65 feet. according to the audio I was at like 43 ft per second (30 MPH). I think it might have been a lil of everything but I put heavy blame on the brakes. We did tests at faster speeds (45 MPH +/-) in Jordan's car IN THE RAIN and we stopped shorter... we couldn't even get his to lock up at like 75 slamming the pedal. Truck was not at the stop sign, we were all still up the road from it a couple hundred feet. I was in second gear I believe, and to be going faster than 45 even, I would have been VERY audible on tape, which I was not.

You tell em Clay :D I was the only one behind him and saw the whole thing. Its pretty much as he said. The MOMENT he hit his brakes he locked up. ABS failure?? whos knows? but it probably was. And yes you would have about 65 feet of skid if not more at about 40 ish MPH. Thats not very many feet. It sounds like alot but its not. Next time your goin 40 amagine slamming the brakes, you would realize it takes a long time to stop. Hey Clay, see ya when you come back up!!!

Good luck, Clay. It's good to see some progression on the matter. I'm looking forward to seeing your sexy beast at the picnic this August.

And the Blazer is perfectly fine.

Jesus that sucks. I hope everything goes your way now, life blows sometimes.

The Blazer had a small group of scratches, and some glass sitting on its bumper. That was seriously it... His bumper went completely under the Blazers bumper.
