You can put it in the air duct if you want. I suggest mounting it higher up to avoid it getting ripped off. Too high and you'll start to see some warming effects from the motor when stopped for a prolonged period of time.
But it doesn't really need that much air flow over it to accurately measure temperature nor does the outside air temp change fast enough that it would ever call for much air flow at all.
Installed my unit today - took a whole 15 mins. Temp is dead stable now. For E30 M3 owners, the outside temp sensor is located on the driver side, right under the fog light assembly.
