how much do you normally charge extra on a base and clear service or is that included with the package? if included, what is the price of it when broken down

Stephen, if you have to ask price, then just know it's too much to spend. i say Oliver, give me the best, when i dropped off my wife's car to him. $2500ish for paint +labor idk what that will cost, but knowing that its done right the first time is > that price ALWAYS!

haha true. but I'm actually comparing prices for a buddy's e36 he's doing at an indie shop up in Sac. I saw his initial invoice with one shop and just felt like there was a lot of upsell like "UV protective coating" extra $150. Then I was like WTF?! he's getting a clear coat what the hell is that needed for. Cut and Polish - $500? pftt last time i had it done it cost me $250. Suffice to say, thanks to Oliver we were able to catch the shop red handed and move on to a more honest one.

btw eric, thats a sweet deal oliver is offering. My buddie's e36 is costing 4.5k so far with a full respray. Is your wife's car going in for a color change as well?

as I understand, imperfections and body panel warpage causes waves. yet all this talk about orange peel and i really never understood what contribute to it. can you elaborate oliver?

I understand that even from the factory, oem paint has orange peel. Is it unavoidable during the paint process? how can it be mitigated short of doing an all around color sand and polishing?

its impossible to avoid orange peel but it is possible to avoid really really bad orange peel. really bad orange peel on a re-finish is caused by bad technique mostly and to a certain extent materials being used. the only way to get a perfect orange peel free finish is to color sand and buff.

Is orange peel isolated on the clear coat stage? If so, is that what you were referring to the benefits of using a more expensive clear to lay better and smoother to counter the problems with bad technique?

When I see many two stage cars painted, dust is pretty prominent in the clear. What are methods shops do to prevent contamination? I don't notice it too much in the base...

It must be especially tricky when you have to flash between coats
