if a car has been resprayed multiple times, would it be more ideal to sand it down (with a heavier grit of course) to a solid layer of paint/primer or bare metal?

Go down to the original primer, that way you don't have to do a filler primer on it

we have a few bmws at the shop this week, 06 650i cabrio, e34, e34 wagon, e92 335,e46 330 cabri and the 2002!, on monday im gonna add the m3 to that list!

nope.
it always looks terrible.

Was re-sprayed due to a minor fender bender.

My paint job is about a year old.

Painter did a great job :)

Looks good, most likely cleared the whole quarter panel and open blended at the sail panel

do plastics need to be primered before paint? if I want to respray a piece that has been paitned without primer, do you recommend sanding it down again?

not really, only if the paint is damaged, i would add a flex agent to the paint to keep it from cracking in the future

but if I'm using the original paint as a base for the new paint, won't I have to sand it off otherwise the layer beneath that one with flex additive would still exhibit cracking?

nah its not but i want to do it right. I'm already planning out how to get my car resprayed and done properly this time.

Don't strip it, the heat from sanding makes the plastic deform and swell, if the paint in the plastic part is in good shape just sand it for adhesion.

Cool so ill just sand it until there is a solid and bonded layer of paint?
