    Nankang Tires

Cliffnotes: Go to hell and die in a long lasting fire.

I knew Nankangs were cheap, and that the quality was probably not so great... but the tires came with the car I bought, so let's ride them for shits and giggles.

This e30 has H&R Race / Bilstein and THR Front CABs. The car is on 17" wheels with 205/40/17.

Let's start by saying that you won't care about the road noise of the tires. Your brain literally will not be able to devote time to that task.

Mind you, I drive a track car around town that has twice as stiffer suspension than this car does with the same wheel/tire size setups, and it's fine because I'm used to it.

I dropped a f*cking kidney at every slightest bump I hit on with those Nankangs. If you ever see the wheels of the car in front of you bounce ever so slightly over a bump, brace for impact and save your children.

A 3rd world country dictator could not possibly be more ruthless than these tires are.

By the way.... when I got the car, it had a serious tendency to pull to the right. Need an alignment right? So I did one... it wasn't too bad, but we got it perfect. Sweet!

Pull up on the highway. Far left lane. 3, 2, 1... and by the time I get go of the wheel I had already cut off the person who just entered the highway on the far right lane. Poor old lady never saw it coming.

About 100 miles later, the sidewall rips completely (mind you the tires were holding air....which at this point seems to be a lot to expect from them) and you couldn't blame it on running it too low/high on pressure.

So I'm with my spare on. I take a few bucks off my savings account to buy Nexen tires. Cheap, always worked for my track car, so by all means let's do it!

On my way there... on the highway... terrible vibrations start. Car starts reaaaaaally pulling to the right. What the f*ck? I must've bent a wheel on this stupid kidney dropping setup.

I make it to the tire changer, take my wheels off and oh, what's this? The entire right side of the tread (from center line to the outside of the wheel) has bubbled up.

Mounted the Nexens (same exact size as the Nankangs), balanced the wheels, went for a ride. Remember that old alignment? Yea, spot-f*cking-on. Vibrations? Gone.

Oh.... remember the murderous bumps? It's suddenly something I can live with.

Moral of the story: You couldn't pay me to rock Nankangs on my car.

Just hope this serves as a heads up for anyone considering tires. If you're looking for cheap/ok tires, go with Nexen N3000s. If you're lookng for best bang for the buck, Direzza DZ101s. And this is coming from someone who's killed more types of tires than the amount of boys that Michael Jackson has touched.

Yes, I used to run a Big O Tires for a Korean guy, and he pushed Nankangs like a madman. Anyway, I never had so much trouble explaining issues, defecting out bad units, re-aligning cars, etc. Keep in mind this was almost 10 years ago now, so this does not speak well for their tech advances either.

(But if you have a Geo Metro, tires are 13 bux each)

I remember my very first and last experience with Nakang tires... on my old Civic. I didn't really push them too hard or anything, I was just concerned with the build quality of them. A couple months after mounting and balancing them, I noticed a tear in the sidewall. It looked like the sidewall had an outer shell to it, and beneath that was the actual tire. That outer shell had cracked and exposed a softer rubber tire beneath it.

I don't know how common that is or what have you... I just felt it was weird and vowed never to purchase them again.

People like them for bugs. I guess there are really only two choices for stock tire sizes on bugs. I choose the kumho powerstar as I was highly suspect of nanking quality.

I ran them on my last car, and can't really complains, other than they were horrible in the rain (but suspensions setup wasn't favoring wet roads either)...

They lasted a good amount of time. Mine were 195/65-14, and were quite comfy.

Compared to what though? Tires made by a 5 year old in Mexico?

Seriously, if anyone runs Nankangs, take a moment to try out it's "limits". As soon as you change for different tires, do the same again to see how it compares. It's night and day in every sense of comfort and handling.

been to 125mph on them, and I do tend to drive a little crazy sometimes... I have two 1000miles trips NC-Iowa on them...

You also have to remember they are $40 tires. Obviously they don't compare to my Hankooks, at double the price. Or even to Sumitomos on my gf's car at $60 a tire.

Nankang isn't a performance tire, why would you treat as such? You get what you pay for, so you get a cheap DD economy tire...

I only defend them because they served their purpose very well for me. And I wouldn't be bashing my Hankooks for their abilities in snow... I'd get snow tires for snow, all season tires for rain, cheap econo-tires to save money, and I would 100% pony-up for track tires.

I came to the same conclusion after my first set of nankangs. I knew they were obvious shit but i couldnt afford otherwise at the time. Big mistake...........
