you would blind everyone on the road if you did, it's best to use them with ellipsoids.

Ooh boy, HID lows AND highs.... I can't wait! Although practicality will probably force me to go back to incandescents in my highs it will certainly be a fun experiment!

Because of the h4 vs. ellipsoid housing ? Even if properly aligned ?

              Yes. You need projectors.

Am I correct in assuming that the 'slim' ballasts are the new electronic (vs. discrete component) ones, which will therefore work significantly better for high beams? If so, I may want two for 9005/9006 bases.
Also, there exist perfectly functional H4 kits out there, both 'single', in which case you lose the H4 high beam, and 'bi-xenon', which do both. I do not believe ellipsoid headlights are necessary, though I do not know if Apexcone makes the appropriate kit, of course.

Yes, you can get them for H4's. According to my friend who has been doing this alot longer then I have, there is no issue with non projectors if they are aimed correctly.

As far as slim ballasts vs. standard, I wouldn't say the slim work better, but they are dead sexy and can be hidden easier.

Both high low and single beam kits are available. There are 2 types of high low kits. Let me know if you are seriously interested and I will get pricing.

FWIW, I had Hella H4 headlights on my cabrio when I bought it (before I put the Euro smileys on) and the H4's had a nice, clean cutoff just like a projector. They are nothing like a traditional reflector.

Any pictures of the slim balasts? I have a velocity getter setup w/ normal 35w ballasts on my red car but am shopping for a setup for my turbo car.

+1, I'd like to see the difference between standard and slim ballasts.

I could be wrong, but I believe the 'slim' ballasts are the ones marketed as DDM and the 'normal' ballasts are Apexcone.
Now, per Jim Powell on bimmerforums, they are all microprocessor units. If this is the case, they should all be equally suitable for low AND high beams, though I understand that using HIDs in high beams will significantly decrease their lifespan. Then again, with replacement bulbs at $100, that is no longer as much an issue as it used to be.

Exactly. The only reason high beams would not last as long is if you flash them which is not good for the ballasts.
