Hey guys, I wanna say thanks for all the support. R3V just fucking rocks!
You might imagine I have been getting quite a few PMs. Some of these I would prefer to answer publicly, so others can use the same info. Matt, hope you don't mind.
Originally posted by Mischief3003would you rather recommend the 10 or 12 inch box? I listen to all kinds of music rap, rock, everything. I just want to have a good mix of spl and sq.
Thanks for your time,
Matt
A quick comparison (wish I knew how to make those bitchin' little charts, but I are teh suck at computerz) of the ported 10, the V1 and the V2 ported 12" boxes:
Size: The 10" box is 2" "shallower" than the 12 box. If you measure from the trunk braces (vertical ribs in the trunk on either side of the ski boot hole) towards the rear of the car, the 12" boxes are 12" deep on the floor, and 6" deep on the top.
All 3 boxes are 15" tall, and literally rubs on the bottom of the speaker "bump" in the rear deck. You MUST remove the "trunk tar" sound deadning to make these boxes fit...yes, the fit is that precise.
Now the real differences: Car modifications. The beauty of the 10" box is that there is NO CUTTING at all...just remove the blank plate for the ski boot, remove the trunk tar, and you are done. In the V1 box, there will be a bit of cutting under the rear speakers, the V2 box requires WAY more precise cutting and in a visible spot, so it has to be basically perfect.
Here is the biggie: The sound. No doubt about it, the 12 is bigger. Harder, deeper, slower, louder, undeniably more bass. If you spend more than 50% of your time listening to hip hop, do the 12, unless it is an unmolested m3, or you just cannot bear to cut your car.
The 10 is "crisper" and is still a ton of fun, plenty of "boom"...but I listen to blues, jazz, old 70's Funk, hip hop, Reggae (Dancehall, too) 70's and 80's rock, plus some more modern rock (O.A.R., Sonia Dada) and if you know this music, you will see there is no fast "trance" or "house" bass anywhere in there...thus I need the extra bottom end of the 12.
If you listen to "fast" bass like in trance, some D-n-B, metal, screamo, BPM stuff....get the 10. Buy a better quality amp, use a cap, and DEFINITELY use an amp on the mids and highs.
I hope this answers some of your questions, guys. I just wish I had more time to get these done!

Ok I'm in for a 10" ported box but after taking some measurements I now have a few questions. I have adjustable shocks so I need to have access to the tops inside the trunk. So will I be able to access them with the 10" box and would it be possible to use a finish panel? My second question is if I don't have a ski pass and I only want to remove the metal panel and not trim any foam will the 10" be enough? I'm not a serious audiophile, but I do want to end up with a well balance system with good sound quality. I also have the sport interior which I believe you said limited the sound quality a bit.

Yuppers...except your 10" sub is actually a 12, so that might be some hassle.
I can get a normal 10 and 2) 3" ports through the ski boot...but 2) 3" ports are actually a bit big for a normal 10. We are gonna build with 2) 2" ports first, then see what it sounds like.
I used to do a lot of single 8" boxes with a single 4" port...I sure did like that, so maybe 2) 3" will work out well.
Patrick, the thin box is still awaiting developent. I will he hooking up with a car that has one installed when I get back home, early next week.
