    S50 exhaust recommendation

    Hi all
just had a shop complete an s50 swap on my e30 and to my surprise the guy used “race cats” for the exhaust and now I’m stuck trying to figure out what I need to make this thing BAR legal (I’m in California unfortunately) I’ve looked all over market place and can’t seem to find an original system that I can modify and use. Would a system from a m50/52 work or do I need to find specifically one that is for an s50.
Car has s50 headers (original) whatever bs “race cats” and a stromung exhaust I had on my car before. The thing sounds like a boat

    any suggestions would be great.

Where in CA are you located?

Chilezen Might be able to help you! I know he was selling and also building systems to assist with this!

Been helping a friend get his s50 car bar’d recently and for the cats you can get the Walker California ones welded in provided the rest of the exhaust matches the e36 obd1 routing. We got a referee that was a stickler and needed the e36 o2 sensor merge to be spliced in to look exactly like realoem diagram. Unfortunately it’s luck of the draw with each car and ref. They make you submit everything online before they physically see the car, and the exhaust they’ll tell you what to do if it it doesn’t comply visually.

If you can get ahold of an m50 stock midsection it’ll work and looks the same as s50. The m52/s52 one doesn’t have the single o2 sensor merge section so not right part even if cats function the same.

When you say "Submit everything online" what am i submitting exactly? I highly doubt the guy that did the swap has any docs of the engine he put in the car.
might just skip the trial and error and see if the guys at Castro Motorsport can take care of it since they've done several throughout the years.

Once you talk to the ref initially over the phone/email, they'll want things such as donor vehicle info, bill of sale or proof engine isn't stolen, pics of exhaust and cats etc.

They'll go over on the phone/email what info to gather to submit for the swap. Once approved, then you get the in-person appointment where they inspect & smog test the car. This process is new within the last few years, as previously you'd just call to make an appointment and they would review everything in person.

My advice would be to start with finding what cat, or cats, you need. I did a search on Magnaflow's website, and it told me this is legal for your engine. The cat in my setup is similar, and about the same price. The website doesn't specify whether you need one or two. It's up to the ref to say whether you have to adhere to single or dual pipes. Maybe you have have a Y-merge to use this one cat. These are questions you can ask in your email. This should be enough to get the ball rolling!
