    What changed is the software that generates the PWM signal. Any VANOS car can be back-fitted to be completely variable. MS would just make it easier.

      I don't know how much you would get, but look at the chart above where I have 20 degrees of advance all the way to 5200. Power starts to fall off and then immediately picks up as the cam is retarded.

      Even at only 12.5 degrees, there is some compromise at the switch point. The ideal profile is probably more like full advance to 4000 and then taper it down to 0 by 5500. I can imagine it would gain 5 hp in places, on the dyno I've found that intake advance is a large factor in power.
