    M20 Flywheel Questions

    1) How much do I get machined off of the engine-side lip?

    2) My ring gear looks pretty good with only tiny area of wear. Should I replace it?

    3) Should I have it balanced after machining it?

I did a quick search but didn't find the answers. thanks

You dont need to machine any off the back. Just grind down where it hits on the oil pan. You dont need to balance it after surface.

I think he's asking about having it lightened

you can pretty much take out the entire chunk of steel that sticks out past the ring gear. that takes about 7lbs off. You can go even deeper and basically end up with a 323i flywheel, about 10lbs lighter.

and yes it should be balanced after being lightened.

I think he was asking how much to take off the engine side so it doesnt hit the oil pan. Which you dont need to take any off if you just grind down the little tabs on the back side of the pan.

But if you want to machine down the flywheel then yes it should be balanced..

yeah, thats what I was askin. I was thinking it would be beneficial to take a lil weight off of the flywheel (both resurface and shave the engine side lip) while I have it out. How much do I need to remove to gain clearance?

I'd rather take it off the flywheel than the oil pan.

you may as well have it lightened.. no point of doing the swap unless you shave it down. you can safely get it down to 15-13lbs.

Does someone have a pic of where exactly needs to be shaved down to clear the oil pan? I'm taking mine in to the machinist soon, and want to be able to give him as much info as possible. Also, what are people paying on average to have the work done? Shaved, lightened, and rebalanced? Thanks!
