Its should be your starter. The pin outs are correct 18-18. Not all pins are used.

had the battery on the charger for a day and a half and I had lots of accessories working. I'll look at the starter. The starter wiring seemed almost fool proof...maybe thats where my problem is.
check my starter thread please:

Can you test the starter on its own by connecting it directly to the battery etc?Mtech1 v8 build thread - https://www.r3vlimited.com/board/sho...d.php?t=413205

do you have a main power lead from the bat to the starter?
yes I have tried and tested this adapter on a 87 year e30 and it worked.Comment

there are pin location differences in both connections, but I don't know if they are significant or not.

My area of focus for the next time I get to the car is starter wiring.
Greg has confirmed that the harness looks correct.
Out of curiosity - why do some of the gaps between pins not line up?

You have a 25pin C101 on one hand and a 20pin adapter?
Or are just using two different images for reference? My 91 m30b35 harness had the same type of 25 pin c101, and an earlier one had a 20 pin.
Obviously a 20 pin c101 adapter won't work if you are trying to use a 25 pin harness. You'll need an adapter for a 25 pin c101 or a 20 pin harness.
Or do you have a picture of each end of the adapter in both pics? Probably this :) It's TOO EARLY lol
I would test the starter on it's own next.

Greg, I certainly believe you that the adapter is tested as working and the pictures look functional.
Could you explain why the pins and holes in the harnesses/adapter do not all line up exactly. Are some of the pins/wires unused in the swap?
thanks
The top picture seems to show an exact male to female relationship, but if you look closely, it is not.

well on some of the early model e30 (like yours) they did not have alot of the other accesorys that the late models did like abs, road speed signals, under load, srs, ect.Greg, I certainly believe you that the adapter is tested as working and the pictures look functional.

essentially there are only 3 pins need to start a m50 from the adapter and they are all the same between all c101's the rest of the stuff is dependent on the year and model ( 318, 325 m3 ect)
the pins are pin 13-13 for the fuel pump, pin 7-21 dme power and pin 18-18 for the starter (12v switched)
have you tried jumping the starter yet?Comment
