How much easier to do an OBD 1 swap than OBD2?

I am considering a swap and I am trying to figure out what type of donor motor to hunt down. What are the pros and cons of the OBD 1 versus OBD2? Thanks

well i will give you credit for asking this question in the 24V swap section, but with questions like this no one will take you seriously. you gotta search THIS particular section of the forum to get your answers...

type something as simple as "obd" and search for the term in the 24v thread.

I will give it a try, but I was hoping to save a bunch of time. Hopefully, there will be some good threads in the search.

to be quite honest, you'll learn a lot more by searching. summaries of this kind of stuff just won't cut it. each option has its pluses and minuses.

obd1 = more support, more documentation, more tuning options, easier wiring

obd2 = better ECU, theft prevention (EWS), expensive (4 o2 sensors! etc)

obd1 is quite a bit easier in my opinion.

Well, one thing I like about my stock m20 is its simplicity and low cost of maint. So, maybe the obd1 is the way to go.

obd1 for simplicity, price and power for starters. imho.

OBDII will theoretically get better mileage IIRC but you have to please it more (think functioning emissions equipment and maintaining 4 O2 sensors) and it's not as receptive to mods when you're talking about S52s (also IIRC)

You can get OBD-II tunes that delete the air pump, back O2 sensors, EWS...........

Keeping whatever comes with the engine will be the easiest.

I would go OBD2 route simply because the engines are newer, lower mileage and well easier to find (for me).

OBD2 will be more expensive due to the need for removal of EWS and what was mentioned. But its a decent trade-off depending on mileage and availability of engines near you.

Tuning is no longer a big deal although OBD1 still has many more options.

Some say the ultimate is s52 or m52 converted to obd1.
Depending on future plans, this may or may not apply to you.

...and anyone who retains the OBD-II should delete these things. There werent as many options for retaining OBD-II when I started my swap, so the OBD-I conversion seemed ideal. But, I had to buy all new sensors and such because all of the old used ones were in poor shape (especially knock sensors..). So that bumped up my cost considerably. The OBD-II harness and sensors I removed from my 70k motor were in excellent shape.

If I had the options that are out there now, I would have kept the motor OBD-II. Above all else, I much prefer the OBD-II diagnostic interface although OBD-I isnt really that bad..
