Is it possible to pull codes through the e36 diagnostic port?

Using a peake tool, is it possible to pull codes through the e36 diagnostic port on the engine harness?

I was planning to buy a peake tool to help me pinpoint my s50 rough running problems, but I've been told that is not possible.

    Any help?

I dont know about the peak but I got my scan tool to work with my car through the obd1 port so I wouldnt see why not.

Yes, it's possible. Otherwise what is the point of the peake tool?

This is what I was told:
"sorry but the peak scan tool will not work with the conventions as the e30 does not have a return for the data line trough the data port"

I'm trying to pinpoint the cause of my rough running s50. I'm thinking that scanning with a peake may help, but am being told its not possible in an e30.

Is there a necessary wiring through the adapter to power the scan tool?

Edit: to clarify, we're all talking about the circular diagnostic port on the e36 engine harness.

If x20 pin 22 is powered, then the Peake tool will work.

FredK, power @ x20 pin 22 will allow the scanner to function fully?

Greg, do I have power there? If not, Its gotta be easy enough to jumper some power to use the scanner.

I don't want to offend anyone or sound too stupid - It's just very frustrating to be so close but so far away from a clean running swap.
                      thanks guys.

I am able to read codes through the diagnostic port. I had a VANOS code and a voltage supply CEL or something like that earlier this summer, that I used a Peake to find.

guess that my adapter pin combination does not allow it to pull codes with the peak but it does allow it to pull codes with other types of scanners, as alex has one of my adapters. so I guess this weekend I will got back and try running a 12v jumper to pin 22 @ the x20 and see if it works I'll get back to you and see what happens
