    high rpm bog?

having an issue with the car, has a bogging feeling at high rpms as if it hits a speed limiter almost... its also random and sometimes it will not do it. changed the maf, filter and plugs...has perfect idle and start, runs great besides.. car is an 84 318i with m50tu from a 95 e36...it has a noisy inline pump im wondering if that could be the issue? ...any info would help, thanks guyzzzz

Do you have a check engine light wired up? And do you have your speed sensor hooked up?

How high of RPM's does it cut out at? My buddy had an m50 e34, and the ground wire in the front of the engine, near the lift point, was bad. There is a resistor on that ground wire inside the fuel injection harness housing, and his had failed. His car cut out at around 5k-6k IIRC.

Just a cheap/easy thing to check.

Sounds like you may be missing the speed signal from the harness to the cluster and experiencing a soft rev cut.

It doesn't apply to NV's, or late model car I think.

Seriously. Late model cluster should be easy to wire up too.

Yeah I know. I remembered the soft rev cut, but couldn't remember about the speed sensor.

But all OBD-I cars (or M50TU) need the speed sensor signal unless the they have the speed sensor delete chip, correct?

Oh yeah, absolutely. Without the signal or speed sensor delete the engine won't rev above 6,300 rpm.

A few other things (like VANOS) are affected by the lack of signal as well resulting in the car not performing 100% ideally. IIRC that is because without the speed signal the DME doesn't sense an engine "load".
