Is there any special reason that u don't want to go OBD1 ? not only will it take care of your ews problem , but it will also free up a lot of space in the engine bay. I was dealing with my uncles 99 528 wagon ews 3. He ended up having to fork over 1400 for a new ECM because ews 3 uses a rolling code system , and the rolling code can only be flashed once onto an ECM. Not sure if this applies to ews 2.

I was in your exact position a month ago, I was going to go to the dealership and sort out ews2 but then matt chimed into a thread of mine and I realized how much easier an ews delete ECU would be....Originally posted by z31maniacI just hate everyone.

I can deal with some Siemens ECUs, but being in NZ, he may have a software version I've never used before, or he may have hardware that's not compatible with the ECUs that I do have here.
So, I'm hesitant to promise anything before I get a chance to figure out what exactly what's running in the ECU you have.
If you swapped the key, EWS module, and ECU out of a car that was previously running, it should run in your car if you've wired it up right...

I'm sure you know this, but all from the same car you need the e36 key, in the e36 ignition, with the e36 antenna ring going to the ews transponder, which goes to the EWS2 box which says okay to the DME.
I believe to align the system you need more wired up than to run it.Originally posted by z31maniacI just hate everyone.

Was the e36 donor auto or stick? If auto look out for Ecu pin 81, at least in the obd1 ecu it needs to see positive when key on Or start. Manuals have it wired straight from fuse box to x20, to ecu . Autos have it from fusebox going through the trans range switch in park and neutral only, then to x20, then to ecu.
I dont have a obd2 wire diagram to double check if this is the same case, but it wouldnt hurt to mention it ,just in case ecu needs to know if ur in park or drive

have been probing wires and nothing seems to be working. my first idea was that the abouve pin 81 on the ECU should be connected to pin 3 of the x20 (E36) connector. did not come up with a reading so i tested the rest of the pins on the X20 and im not getting a continuity between any of them.
I am missing some pins from the X20 so is it possible its one of them?
That said, I am using a manual loom and an auto ECU. should that mean that i dont have to worry about this wiring as it should be wired from the factory? my hunch its pin 3 on the X20 is that i have a wiring diagram that says its "unused/tranny", as below. it is not connected to anything. unfortunately i do not know if pin 81 on the ECU is correct either. can anyone shed some light on this to verify papajetta's suggestion?
