    Chip necessary on OBD1 m52?

Hello. As I understand it, some s50's came with 413 ECU's, same as m50tu's. If the ECU is able to adapt that much to the cams and displacement, can it do the same for an OBD1 m52? With stock or s52 cams, it's kinda halfway between an m50 and an s50... Thoughts?

    It need's the correct chip for said mod's. A 413 DME from a m50 is going to have a different program then a 413 DME from a 95 S50 M3.

I did not know that. That's silly for BMW to assign the same part number for different tunes ><

That is just the Bosch part number of the DME 0 261 200 413, not a BMW part number.

Someone on bimmerforums said he's got a stock 506 s50 chip that works great with his OBD1 m52 with s52 cams. Anybody else using something similar?

the physical DME is the same. that's what the number "413" is in reference to. it's the removable chip inside that is different...

just like the super nintendo system can play both "super mario bros" and "super mario bros 3".

edit- and, i wouldn't use an s50 chip with a 2.8. go ahead and drop a couple hundred bucks on a proper chip for your motor.

Yes, I understand now. Still silly IMO :D

It would be sillier to have to swap an entire ECU when the only difference is the chip. :)

Let me know if I can help...

I'm running a 506 chip in 413 dme, stock s52 obd1 swapped. Runs good can't complain, once I get it on the dyno as-is just cuz I'm curious I'll be getting either a TRM tune or a WAR chip, undecided.

                    Don't 506 chips have EWS?

I'd bet an OEM S50 chip would run just fine on an M52. Hell, I'd rock it.

The 506 DME it came from had EWS, I popped the 506 chip into a 413 redlabel box and to my surprise it fired up on the 1st crank.
