    Head/Vanos Question

So my head is cracked. If I buy a complete head that has already been checked out is there any need for the vanos tools etc?

    Thanks

Yes. You will need the cam blocks at a very minimum to reinstall the new head.

I guess this whole vanos system still baffles me. I have done plenty of head gaskets before and just been able to line up the cams when the no.1 is at tdc.

Ah, in order to get the Vanos installed, you don't necessarily need the round turning tool. However, it helps. You also don't NEED the dummy tensioner.

To set the cams properly, the blocks will be best. It's hard to eyeball how vertical the vertical flats on the cams are.

What about disassembly? Any special tools? Or just remove tensioner, etc?

Disassembly without special tools is possible. You just need to be very careful during the cam removal process.

There is a writeup on Pelican Parts on cam removal that can help you visualize what it is you need to do.

From what I remember, the tool doesn't hold the cams so that the flats on top are horizontal. Don't do it without the tool.

Cam locking tool and vanos turning tool are REQUIRED for a proper vanos install.

As far as removing the cams, always remember as soon as one nut is loose one goes tight. No more than a 1/4 turn at a time.
