I guess this whole vanos system still baffles me. I have done plenty of head gaskets before and just been able to line up the cams when the no.1 is at tdc.
Ah, in order to get the Vanos installed, you don't necessarily need the round turning tool. However, it helps. You also don't NEED the dummy tensioner.
To set the cams properly, the blocks will be best. It's hard to eyeball how vertical the vertical flats on the cams are.

Cam locking tool and vanos turning tool are REQUIRED for a proper vanos install.
As far as removing the cams, always remember as soon as one nut is loose one goes tight. No more than a 1/4 turn at a time.
