    guys using ZF trannys .........

make sure the clutch masters ring at the end is to the RIGHT of the bracket ( 17mm on the right , 13 on the left ) . My mechanic had it the other way around causing too much bending of the pivoting rod when depressing the clutch pedal. I found out the hard way when my pedal went to the floor at the track going 90mph =/ had to get towed off the track. Lucky for me my gf's parents live a couple miles from willow springs.......limping the car back in 1st gear was annoyingly fun.

    just a heads up guys

I've driven over 150 miles with no clutch, you couldn't do it for a measly 2 or 3? :p

Also, why are you futzing with the master cyl? It's not really a problem specific to the ZF trans, unless I'm misunderstanding things here.
    paint sucks

I was thinking the same. So he put the odd-ball 17mm bolt (iirc it's eccentric) through the bracket from the wrong side? I wouldn't think that would work so well..

Oh yeah, I've driven roughly 150 miles on the street minus the slave cylinder (ie. no clutch actuation) as well. What fun.

So you put parts in the wrong way and it didnt work?

I did my clutch master recently (zf trans, e36 slave cylinder) with no problems

The master cylinder should be a standard E30 part.. Definitely not an E36 part..

I'm not being a dick. Thought I'd start with that.. What you are saying would be a good 'heads up' for everyone if we knew what exactly you are talking about. I like to think I know these cars decently so I'm only asking to try to clear things up for others..

ya no its cool, I just wanted to have everyone go and double check the position of the master cylinder's top section and have the ring to the right of the bracket ( above the pedal ).

                        This is the slave portion.

Of course, the E36 M3 clutch master and slave are a different diameter from the others, so it is relevant to a certain degree. My E30 clutch master with E36 M3 slave setup is not one that I'm happy with.

are you referring to the fact that the clutch engages with the pedal coming right off the floor? this was my experience with those parts. i switched to a e36 325i slave cylinder and this corrected the problem for me. it engages about halfway up now, but the pedal has become noticeably stiffer

Okay, either I'm extremely ignorant or he still isn't explaining what he's talking about properly.

I don't understand what he means by:

"the position of the master cylinder's top section and have the ring to the right of the bracket ( above the pedal )"

:-? Maybe a quick picture/photo to elaborate for the more "simple" crowd like myself?
