Radiator sensor wiring?

Quick question, I have this plug from my 1984 318i chassis, on the driver side:



and then the sensor on the passenger side:




Am I supposed to connect them?

Brown is the ground, green and black are the signal wiring. Connect brown to either green or black with the key on and your aux fan should turn on. Since you swapped radiators, it looks to me like you need to get the pigtail from a late model, I think the wiring matches up.

If you're not running A/C or using the stock AUX fan you don't need to worry about that wiring.

What fan should I use? Does the Aux fan suffice? I was thinking of buying a slim aftermarket fan, but what size? 14"?

From the wiring diagram that I have, you should have 4 wires. 2 greens and 2 blacks. 2 blacks are signals. the 2 greens are hooked together and hot! not ground! To hook it to the rad switch, you need a matching 3-pin pigtail. The black wire with brown stripes goes to 3 and pure black goes to 2. Any green goes to 1 and you can disregard the other green.

Yes, I used Massive's brakets to install mine. Exspensive but worth it! Very sturdy. Don't much care for the nylon straps that go through to hold it on.

Depending on your particular engine bay, it may or may not fit as a puller. E-fans are deceptively deep, the "fan" part is thin, but the motors are often 2.5" thick, or more. There are various slim-line electric fans that may work depending on how much clearance you have, but they are generally much pricier.

On my M3 with a s50b32 pushed back as far as possible towards the firewall, and a euro e36 M3 radiator, there isn't really room for all but the thinnest of fans. I'm looking at a 324td mechanical clutch/fan as a possible solution to fit a puller.

Oh, and the stock aux fan seems fairly anemic compared to a good quality 16" aftermarket fan. This is Of course subjective, based on watching/listening/feeling the stock fan run vs. an aftermarket fan - I'm not sure that anyone knows the actual cfm rating of the aux fan.

I have right under 2". The Spal is 2.05" thick.

Not cheap, the combo is about $230 from tischer. Ive never been to find specific dimensions, but the m20 clutch is about 2.25" deep, and from what I understand, the td clutch is significantly thinner than that. Coupled with the thinner fan as well, and I think it's the solution to my problem. Maybe I'll just order one tonight and see.
