    S50 Reassembled.

Luke and I spent the entire day re-assembling the rest of the S50.

Here's a few symptoms and subsequent questions:

Put everything together, turn her over, it takes a few seconds, starts. Idles like a giant turd, surging idle from 1k-2.4k rpm. Very, very rough. Shaking hood, doors, interior bits. After a few minutes it smooths itself out A LITTLE. Then it dies. Now, it doesn't really want to stay started for more than 20 seconds, very, very rough idle and it dies. Idle doesn't really get above 400-600 and surges randomly to around 1k.

Vacuum leaks are nill to none. There's the intake to the fuel rail that's suspect as it's a bit old looking but not torn as far as I can see.

    MAF looks fine.
    ICV looks fine.

We have 1, two pin connector on the head that doesn't have a plug. 1, 3 pin connector without a home. According to the diagrams and peeling back the plug connector's sheathing it's all hooked up right. No idea what would be causing such a rough idle at this point. We poked and prodded and checked and double checked connections. Any ideas what so ever? I really don't want to wear out Luke's awesomely gracious generosity with the Astro Van AND he needs it around if he keeps building all these damn boxes. SO, this is a plea for some insight, guidance, advice, pointers, ect AND also beneficial if you want your boxes anytime soon. I'm holding the parts runner hostage until then!

    Thanks in advance.

This is where I'd love to see what the A/F looks like...

Is it running rich or lean?

        bad temp sensor connection?

Is the maf in backwards? I had my maf in backwards for a second and the idle was nuts. Then I figured it out and switched if and it purred like a baby lion after that.

            Smells very rich currently.

Would a bad temp sensor cause the idle to be incredibly rough?

Keep in mind this engine ran fantastic all the way up until it blew a head gasket and I found cracked/shotty retainers.

Seriously? I'll go swap that right now. Would orientation if the MAF plug matter at all also?

No, no. I get that. I mean, the orientation. As in the plug is facing say, the fender well, the ground the hood... does it matter?

First thing I checked was AFM. It was never unplugged, BTW.

Black (SW) Yellow (GE) and Transluctent (TR), so the colors on the plug match the ETM colors...but that is about th eonly plug on the car thatlines up to an E36 S50 diagram.

Almost all the colors were a little off, as in the Coolant temp (guage) wires were correct, but the codes for the DME temp sensor were off. I don't take notes well, and did not last night, but I did compare them to the ETM for what that harness is supposed to be.

I am gonna head down in the AM if he doesn't get it nailed.

Chris, you did take the MAF off that boot at one time, didn't you? I know it was on earlier, but I think when you were cleaning it you pulled the boot off....so check that first!

The fucking MAF was on wrong. My dumbass was so tired last night that I just threw it on there without looking at the God Damn arrow ON the MAF.

Have a coolant leak from what appears to be the thermostat, but, will report back after copious cleaning and checking and double checking shit.

Yeah, Luke reminds me how often I tend to (as he says) "panic". I don't want to think of it as panicking so much as "preemptive worry".

                              P.S.

If you don't tighten your thermostat, it leaks a bit. Just a heads up.
