I know that those treehouse racing cab's give you more clearence for m/s50 swaps, but are they necessary or just a luxury?

Definitely NOT necessary. Out of the 10 or so swap cars I have personally been involved with not one has had them and I believe all of them have run the eBay long tube headers that most people here use.

My car had treehouse CABs on it installed by the PO. It does provide plenty of clearance but is not needed. The ebay SS headers worked great.
