10k might do it... depending on how quick and dirty you want it.

if you want the engine rebuilt, clean install, custom exhaust, etc... expect closer to 20k...

It cost me circa $4k for the engine trans, all new OBD1 sensors, bottom end bearings, E34 swap parts, a 3:46 LSD, E36 M3 rack, new Euro MAF.
            All my own labor.
I could have saved a bit by using used OBD1 sensors and leaving the bottom end alone, but it is a track engine and I did not want the potential BS of faulty old sensors.

As a Noob and not really knowing the ins and outs of the swap, you are totally at the mercy of the installer.

LOL...at this point in time USD = Austrailian dollar = Canadian dollar...roughly. Sad, as when i went to Australia a few years ago you could get almost 2 Aussie dollars for one USD. I bet the Aussies are loving the power of their dollar. I'd love to go back but not that these exchange rates.

I like 4K myself. This is the reason I got an E30/ Love the look and want a little more power. Did anyone ever do a inventory/Cost thread?
I plan pon driving until first of the year and playing with it.

If you shop around you could find an s50 for ~1k. It's already OBD I so you don't have to worry about converting. I don't think a shop would charge ~8-9k for an engine swap...that seems very high

I know a guy in Dallas that does swaps all the time for E30s. he quoted me $2,800 for S52 swap labor

$3,000 in labor sounds about right. Then $3,000 for the engine and tranny. Then $1,500 for swap parts such as mounts, exhaust, fluids, brake booster, wiring harness, ect.

That's not even $8k. I don't see how it would go over $10k unless the mechanic is screwing you, or you paid too much for the engine and transmission.

Since he's from Australia Im going to assume he wants the euro s50 swap? In that case itll be pretty close to 10k done properly.

Never understood why people would want to pay other people to do something on a car that they supposedly "love" and are an "enthusiast" of.

To each their own I guess.

Not sure what engines are available over there. I guess it's a different ball game. Let's just say that my post is an example of US price range.

If you are motivated enough go out and do it yourself. This forum has plenty of knowledge and hundreds (maybe?) of people who have done their own 24v swaps.

Also, check out e30tech. They're pretty mechanical/technical over there as well.
