This isnt exactly an 24v swap thread but it pertains to tuning options when going 24v. Plus having owned a few e30s myself and done a few m5x swaps id rather share this experience with you guys since i like hanging out here better.
I just recently obd1 swapped my 97 e36 m3 which prior to the swap still had the stock tune. After waiting on the chip from TRM to come for a week it was a dissapointing experience when i actually put it in...
Before i explain my experience ill list the two chips in question and my mods:
My car:
-Obd1 s52
-540 HFM(800)
-24# injectors
-m50 manifold
-short ram intake
-Raceland longtubes
-full 3" straight pipe
-uuc 8.5 fw/m5 clutch
TRM chip:
-s52
-m50 manifold
-540 HFM
-24lb injectors
-91 octane
-ltw fw
Turner chip:
-s50
-540 hfm
-24 lb injectors
Prior to recieving the TRM chip I had been running my buddies turner s50 chip to drive around on for about 2 days(maybe 15 miles max, i live in a 3 mile radius collegetown, GO COUGS!). I had been really impressed with the turner chip. The torque curve was vastly improved. I had way better torque from 3k rpm up, even the top end felt substantiall stronger, throttle response was much better too. Thinking the trm tune would be even better i couldnt wait to put it in.
After putting it in and going for a drive the car felt slower. Throttle response was about the same but the torque just wasnt the same. I felt like the turner had the same amount of torque at 3k that the trm did at 3.5k rpm. Even the top end with the trm chip felt weaker. I drove it around for about 15 miles on purpose to give the new chip time to adjust and hone in on its afrs. Still the trm chip didnt feel as strong
Before you ask i dont have any datalogging or 30-70mph or 60-100mph times to verify. I am going to go out tomorrow and swap chips back to back and do some 30-70s etc to verify.
With all the great talk about trm going on i was expecting more. I guess to some extent it was hype?
And before anyone asks i havent experienced any knock, detonation or negative side-effects of running the turner tune.
