    BAR your 24v swap

So I went through the process of getting the swap legal. It was more time consuming than anything, since I had to go back a total of 4 times.

Pretty lenient for visual as long as it passes the sniff test @ the pierce college location

    Hi,

Would you mind describing a bit about what specific paperwork you needed (if any?)
Also, what type of intake were you running?

I know you mentioned they were lax on visual, but did they go through the hassle of validating the VIN on the engine block? Did they care what type and configuration of cats you were running?

Congrats on getting your swap legalized!

a cone on the maf is okay, they said as long as air intake temps are regulated not on airbox ( s50 has it on intake manifold )

e36 cats were necessary or carb legal ones, charcoal canister too, gas cap

I needed new plugs, cats, gas cap, oil to pass

Just everything from motor to cats e36 needs to be there

They only checked for the VIN on the door and the chassis

The guy thoroughly inspected my car twice. The last two visits he just did the rolling sniff test

        Perfect, thanks!

I was just worried because I'm not 100% by the book legal.
I have the EVAP canister hooked up and the PCV/vacuum lines are all routed correctly. But I have an OBD-I converted motor with OBD-II cats & OBD-II exhaust manifolds. Good to hear that there is a possibility they won't hassle me about being by-the-book accurate.

As long as the obd2 cats have the bmw emblem and appear original it should be fine

Has any of you tried to BAR an OBD I S52 swap? I'm about to start my swap but i don't know what they have to say about that. i want to convert it to OBD I but if it won't pass i need to keep it OBD II.

You can just pass it as an S50. That's what many people do.

This. In California it's illegal to modify or remove any emissions controls. Converting a motor to OBDI does just that, and if you tell them it's an S52, they're going to be looking for OBDII components that aren't there.

This is exactly the reason why I ask because e30's were not equipped with obd I emission controls so technically if you install an obd I s52 you add obd I to the car and not remove obd II. What do you guys think?

The motor, and all of the emissions controls that came with it, have to be as they were from the factory.

If you want it BAR'd as an S52, it needs to be running in OBD2 form. Definitely more work!

If you want an OBD1 S52, you need to bar it as an S50.

Is that clear enough for you?

A local community college might have the BAR/Referee station within it. Go drive your car for a few hundred miles or so before you think too hard about getting it BAR'd. Shit can go wrong and you'll be able to figure out the little kinks which will ultimately have your car running at it's best in terms of CO and NOX outputs.
