might have a lead on an m54b30 swap.

so i might do work for some place, and in return get an m54b30 for a swap, what would all need modifying for the swap? obviously ECU, harness, brake booster etc.
but what about engine mounts, what about a tranny? not so sure if i want to do this or not.

Everything but the electronics will be exactly the same as any other swap. Hoveringuy has worked those out, so you can buy his circuits.

an M54 shouldnt be running OBD1 IMO.

Why? It seems to work. Solving the EWS issues with an E46 OBD2 swap would be expensive.

well i just had it sorta offered, pretty sure the guys have never done one. i talked with some other people and i hear it's just quite a bitch, and they are more delicate than an m20, and tim,as i found out yesterday it has a snapped head bolt :/ so now i'm trying to open up my options, don't wanna dump hella time effort and money into an eta..... i'm on the market for an m20b25.

you cannot easily convert an M54 to obd1 because it is dual vanos.... there is no dual vanos obd1 engine in existence. Your going to have to either add all the ews and other components to complete obd2, or run a standalone system($$$$$)

^ Sadly that is right and wrong.

Hoveringuy has a Dual vanos circuit which seems to work great!

I think OBD1 M54B30 is great. OBD1 is a great engine management. OBD2 has its ups and its down. They are just different. But for an E30 OBD1 is great.

You used to not easily be able convert an M54 to OBD1. I've shown that it can be done and that the motor is reliable and makes good power. It's only slghtly more difficult than any other OBD1 conversion. The VANOS control circuit takes care of all the nasty dual-VANOS and DISA stuff for you.

I've actually had mine on Megaquirt3 for the last two weeks now and it's running as well, or better, than before so that's another option.

Good, DONT waste time on the B27! TRUST ME. I rebuilt mine and three or four months later got sick of how slow it was and ripped it back out for a 24V Swap. It was such a waste of money.

Tho I imagine anything is faster then that W123 ;)

Run an M54 on stock ECU and run it on OBD1 with whatever additions you want and see if they make equal power.
