    Cali ref question (finally passed)

I'm going to get my car refereed. Is the intake temp sensor thingy part of smog? It just broke today so i bypassed it and ran the coolant line directly to the TB. I also have a Dinan cone filter that is "smog legal"

My apointment is on thursday any help is appreciated

They won't notice. I covered mine in electrical tape and tucked it deep into the bay, they didn't care.

      Nice, thanks Danny.

What kind of filter/intake did you have?

Some autozone filter on the end of the MAF.

When I got my car BAr'd, the tech told me that a cone filter is fine, as the intake temp sensor is on the manifold and not the stock airbox

My guy was pretty lenient, He told me as long as the CEL functions and I have dual cats, as well as stock looking exhaust from manifold to muffler he will give the sticker

Passing the sniffer part was the hardest part

Well fuck. I guess my brand new cat won't Work? i currently have Obd 2 headers to 2.5" all the back. I think I'm going to give it a go anyway. I've heard the ref in Santa Rosa is lenient.

Thanks again for the responses. I'll update this Thursday.

All right, so in Santa Rosa they DO smog your car on site. They went ahead an put it on rollers and to my surprise it passed emissions. The one and only thing that failed me was the visual inspection my single pipe cat.

Looking for an e36 cat. Where is a cheap place to get one?

You'd be best finding a used cat section on bimmerforums.

good idea.. I have until April to figure out smog so I may just do that.. my local muffler shop quoted me about $300 for dual cats. I dont think i can live with paying that much when my current shit works just fine.

Why should it even mater if it's a dual or single cat anyway? Fuck sometimes i hate California.

It shouldn't and it doesn't. It's just another hoop you have to jump through and it sells more CA compliant cats since it's illegal to sell a used cat.

Thats why I didn't BAR my M52, feck that. Shop I know of doesn't care what is in the car as long as it sniffs clean and has the basic smog stuff under the hood (charcoal canister and whatever else). Wouldn't have batted an eye if I had headers, but I sure wasn't building a new exhaust with a compliant cat to get a sticker.

A little update.. I found some stock cats on CL for $50. I just got them welded in and surprisingly they made my car sound a lot better (no more rasp).

I made another appointment for the 7th so wish me luck.

Hey what do you guys think about the chances of success after dropping in a diesel?
Or was this ref's statement more along the lines of "obviously not way out of line" type of thing?

You can get a diesel swap BAR'd too. It needs to be from the same year car or newer though.
