    OBDII Diagnostic Port

I'm planning out my OBDII 24v swap and wanted to know if anyone out there with an OBDII 24v swap has been able to remove and successfully install the OBDII diagnostic port from a 96-99 E36 and install it into their E30?

I think it would be nice to be able to use an app like Torque on my Asus tablet to be able to view and record data off the OBDII port.

I have an OBDII port hooked up to my m52 swap. It's not the factory connector from the e36 but it serves the same purpose. I am able to read OBDII codes with my codereader and view live data as well. There are only a few wires that you need to connect to get it working.

I did it in my OBD2 engine swap. I ordered the plug, plug housing, and contacts new from ECS Tuning. The contacts come with wires on them. They are cheap. Look over realoem for part #'s. Or on ECS Tuning ( I think they put them under the E46 M3 section).

I was going to try and just grab the original port off of a 98 328i parts car and wasn't sure if I should just cut the wiring or is there a connector somewhere I should attempt to disconnect to remove it properly?

you mean the 16 pin OBDII port? you realize you can do the same thing with the 20 pin diagnostics port?

I know you can use the 20 pin but I want to be able to use a standard 16 pin Bluetooth OBDII adapter so I can pair it with my Asus tablet to use with the Torque app.

I've seen the adapters but just for easier access I'd rather not dick around with continually popping the hood to get to it if I have to reset it for whatever reason, plus I'm not so sure how well the Bluetooth adapter would hold up to the heat in the engine bay.

you could run it inside the car

honestly though, I've got torque on my android. it's OK - I don't think it's worth all the work you're going to put into it, though. I mean, you can read out a few of the ECU's functions and reset codes, but I can't see wanting it to be a permanent installation.

How hard is it to wire in the OEM OBDII port?

It's easy to wire. You'll just have to figure out which diagnostic line to use for pin #7 based on what engine management you are using. (such as x60004 #32 for MS43, MSS52, and MSS54.)

This is what you need to connect. Obviously verify all wiring with BMW schematics before you do anything. :)

                              Pin Color
                              1 GN/WS Ignition switched live (ie. C101 #6 & X60004 #26)
                              4 BR Ground
                              5 BR/SW Ground
7 ws/vio/ge Diagnostic line engine (Signal Data link TXD) x60004 #32
                              9 SW Speed C101 #9 & X60004 #17
                              16 RT/SW Continuous positive
