    Oil Pan Gasket AND sealant?

I am about to swap the oil pan and bought a new gasket but wanted to know if I should add a sealant too or just use the gasket by itself?

    Thanks

I add a very small amount of RVT to each side of the gasket. Been doing this for years and no leaks on any of my engines.

I add a thin film or gasket maker as well. Have been flamed for it and you may as well.

But I have a sparkling clean engine, driveway and garage floor ;-)

I always see people saying to never use any gasket maker, or sealant with the oil pan gasket. Is there a valid reason why? I would think a thin layer of gasket maker or sealant on both mating surfaces would just ensure a better seal, and less likely to have a leak in the future.

I just skip the gasket and use "The Right Stuff". 1/8" bead all the way around, hand tighten bolts, let sit for about 20mins and torque. Been doing this for years with zero issues.

Product isn't cheap but we buy it by the caulking-gun tube full.

I didn't use any sealant on mine and it LEAKS LIKE A SEIVE!

I am going to do it all over again and use ultra grey on both sides. Fun times since I am running a G260 and have to pull the tranny to do it.

              Fffffuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!!!!!!

On that note where other than the dealer can you buy a gasket that isn't made by VR? That is all I could find.

I use a dab of RTV at the interfaces between the front timing cover and the block, as well as the block and the rear main seal carrier.

My oil pan does not leak.

I coat the whole thing in Curil K2. Pan never leaks. Awesome stuff.

I use Toyota RTV. It works great and no leaks whatsoever.

after reading the thread about what do you wish you had known earlier(about 24v swaps), i pulled my pan and got rid of the victor reinz oil pan gasket- I just used black RTV. I've done that plenty of times in the past on other cars with great success.

The OE way is to put a dab of RTV at the joint between the front timing cover and the rear main seal, then put the gasket on.
I don't always wreck cars, but when I do I wreck them into trees.

I used rtv all the way around and on both sides of the gasket. No leaks.

I used Permatex Gasket sealer. Better safe than sorry. Used it on both sides of the gakset, and the gasket faces of the pan and the block.

We also did the same on the gasket/housing for the rear main seal that I just replaced.

2 oil pan gaskets didn't line up with my oil pan+windage tray

I yanked the gaskets and just ran black RTV with no gaskets and have no leaks.
