From M42 to M52 - Tach will work? And, Temp Sensor Question.

I did a quick search and came up empty. So here we go...

First things first, the car is a 1991 318iS and the motor is a 97 M52B28 which is going OBD1.

Are there no issues with the tachometer signal switching from the 4 cylinder M42 to the 6 cylinder M52...?

Now for the temp sensor... My friend who has done multiple OBD2 to OBD1 swaps told me to take the stock OBD2 sensor which has 4 wires, send 2 to the ECU and 2 to the gauge which would take car of the OBD1 setup of two different sensors... I then heard that in order for the gauge to work in my car I need to hook up the sensor of my M42 and send that to the gauge... I know people have made custom units to plug into the throttle body heater I think for this reason. Is the M42 sensor calibrated with the 413ECU?

    Any clarification could help!

    Thanks,
    Brandon

You'll need to swap your cluster's 4 cylinder coding plug to a late model 6 cylinder E30 coding plug (See image 1 below).

    Image1. Coding plug location.

Inside of the plug housing is a chip which converts the ECU signal to the tachometer drive signal (See image 2 below). These chips are different for a 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder.

    Image 2. Coding plug inerts.

If you have trouble finding one, I have a spare I'll send you for $10 shipped.

Thanks for the VERY detailed answer to my tachometer question! I should be able to get one local, but if not I will send you a PM!

Anyone know what the deal is with the temp sensor?

you need to move the gauge temp sensor from your M42 to the M50. on E30s the gauge sensor has nothing to do with the ECU.

[RANT]It has been a week since I ordered parts from you guys and I still haven't received tracking... I called Rob this morning, he said they were out the door today and that I would get an email from Fedex when they shipped, no email... So I fired him off an email, no response as usual... It would have been nice to have all the parts I needed by the weekend but I guess customer service isn't a priority. I try to be as patient as I can but one week is ridiculous amount of processing time and the email responses are always slow and actually quite complicated to decrypt your responses when you say "use my MarkertMotorWorks Email addy" because I don't know what that is as I thought I was already emailing you at your work email address. So PLEASE ship my parts!![/RANT]

The sensor will be shipped to me tomorrow via rightcoastbias, after one day...

I am not sure if I understand the question. I am running OBD1 on an M52... in my 1991 318iS.

Be patient. And he was asking why are you swapping it to OBD1.

Patience is not a strong suit of mine. I was hoping to get parts for this weekend for a huge euro meet next weekend and it looks like car won't be ready... its a real dissapointment for me which causes anger which causes no more patience which causes rants. I just don't understand how you can tell someone you will receive tracking info within minutes and nothing... no email responses either. I understand its a small business but customer service is what keeps a business running...

Anyway, no more on that subject.

I am going to OBD1 because of tuneability and lack of emission control.
